Mystical Anthology of San Juan Diego based on the Nican Mopohua
Keywords:
Juan Diego, Virgin of Guadalupe, flowers, nature, mystical visionAbstract
Based upon the Nican Mopohua’s mariophanic text, the present article develops some exegetical approaches to the mystical experience of the indigenous San Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, visionary of Santa María de Guadalupe, in the manner of florileges or anthologies arising from the contemplation of a sublimated nature. The mystical experience of the seer on the hill of the Tepeyac constitutes an authentic emotional intuition where flowers and thorns, the orchard and the desert are linked —through categories inculturated from the Mesoamerican worldview—, in order to communicate a transcendent and beatific experience.
